The Robert Covington College Scholarship seeks to award qualified applicants monetary assistance to pursue their academic goals.  The Robert Covington College Scholarship is open to academically talented U.S. citizens and permanent residents from ethnic and racial backgrounds.  There are two areas of the Robert Covington College Scholarship Fund.  Applicants may apply for either the Robert Covington General Scholarship or the Sylvia Covington Healthcare Scholarship.  Qualified applicants must demonstrate proven leadership capability, intellectual curiosity, ideals regarding social justice, community service and certain requirements for the SCHS.  These are ideals that Robert and/or Sylvia Covington embodied.

Robert Covington was born the youngest of nine children to Walter and Maggie Jewel Terry Covington in Rockingham, North Carolina.  His primary and secondary education was received in the Ellerbe and Rockingham School Districts located in North Carolina; where he was affectionately referred to as Joe Cubred and to those extremely close to him, as the King of Rockingham.  During this time, Robert was respected as the youngest business owner in his hometown.  He was notably successful and possessed a keen intellect for managing with a steady hand.  At the tender age of 15 Robert, met the love of his life.  Shortly thereafter, on August 22, 1961, he married his partner for life Sylvia Covington.  These two destined lovebirds shortly relocated to New York and started to establish their family.  To this union 5 children were born, Traun,  Alison, Orlando, Kimmie and Darius.

While living in New York Robert attended The New York State Air Resources School receiving a degree in Engineering.  He also attended LaSalle University receiving a degree in Stationary Engineering.  He took pride in providing for his family as an Engineer in the Yorkville area of New York City overseeing numerous sites at a time and leading large teams of men.  Robert also attended The Manhattan Bible Institute, where he gained insight to biblical truth.  Robert was an avid learner and encouraged others to pursue higher learner.

Robert's early Christian experience initially began as a child at both Lee Thee AME Zion and The Temple Church of God in Christ, both located in Rockingham, North Carolina.  Upon migrating to New York, he accepted the Lord as his Savior and received the gift of the Holy Ghost in 1974 at The Gospel Temple Church of America.  During his tenure at Gospel Temple Robert was faithful to the choir, deacons and minister’s board.  He was soon elevated to the office of Pastor, first at The True Zion Gospel Temple and then he relocated his membership to Mount Vernon and became the Senior Pastor of Holy Temple #2, which later changed its name to Pentecostal Deliverance Church of Christ, Inc.

Reverend Covington was known and is remembered for his love of people, the tremendous anointing that rested upon his life, his seriousness about and commitment to ministry and his love and devotion to his family.  He is remembered for his impeccable leadership qualities, both as a manager in his secular career and also the demonstration and manifestation of the power of God which was exemplified in the multitude of souls that were filled with the Holy Ghost, delivered from drug addiction, illnesses and demons.  He was a man of much prayer.  He is known for his legendary devotion to his family, the ministry he served in the capacity of Sr. Pastor and the community at large.  He was an example of being a lifelong learner.  His hand print rest upon the lives of many far and near.

Sylvia Covington was born in Homestead, Pennsylvania to the late Mr. Willie Watkins and Mrs. Gloria Milner.  Mrs. Covington was raised in the southlands of Rockingham, North Carolina where she met and married her childhood sweetheart and partner for life, the late and great Pastor Robert Covington.  Two years after their marital union they began their family.   Although she raised raised five children, Mother Covington is the “Nana” to a host of grandchildren and a few great-grandchildren.

After migrating up north and enjoying life’s worldly pleasures, Shepherd Mother Covington joined the Gosple Temple Church of America where she accepted the Lord and received the baptism of the Holy Ghost under the auspices of the late Bishop Samuel Canion.  Mother Covington, sang on the choir and reared her children in the strength of the Lord.  Later, her husband accepted the pastorate call and Mother Covington became First Lady of True Zion Gosple Temple in Jamaica, Queens.  When the late Pastor Covington transferred his pastorate to Mount Vernon, NY, Mother Covington became First Lady of Holy Temple #2 which then incorporated to the now Pentecostal Deliverance Church of Christ, Inc.  It was in Pentecostal Deliverance that Mother Covington co-founded various aspects of the ministry working along side of her husband.  She worked tirelessly in the kitchen serving food to the members and making sure members were even able to be provided with take-home food packages.  She worked along side of the Mothers of the church helping to tarry with various members and encouraging the members as the congregation grew.  Mother Covington was given the position of Church Advisor by the late Founder Pastor Robert Covington and then elevated to the position of Shepherd Mother and Assistant Pastor upon the transition of her husband.  She continues to serve as an ordained Elder in the Lords Church and the Assistant Pastor of The Pentecostal Deliverance Church of Christ Inc.

Mother Covington is a proud graduate of The College of New Rochelle.  She is also a graduate of The S and M Bible Institute where she graduated with Valedictorian status.  She worked for 22 years at Metropolitan Hospital as a nurse and then The School of the Deaf until she was injured and retired.  Periodically, because of the demand of the healthcare field Elder Covington will accept private cases.
Mrs. Sylvia Covington continues to keep busy as a retiree and a widow.
